A thought of mine, how many hunters are in the USA? With a quick search found some interesting numbers. With so many people who enjoy the outdoors only a small number of them are hunters. With hunters declining every year. This for a multitude of reasons that I have no desire to get into today. The last survey was in 2017 so the date is older (they only survey every 5 years) Only about 11-12 million hunters in the USA. Which probably means many people know somebody that hunts yet at the same time don’t hunt themselves. Why do I bring this up? Good question. I started thinking about all the people that have the ability to hunt, yet no skills after the shot has been made.
What I am talking about here is gutting, skinning, quartering, defeathering, etc what you have harvested through a hunting means, either with firearm or archery being the top two. Of non-hunters the only ones that come to mind are butchers with this skill set. I would even debate that there are many recreational hunters that may even lack these skills as well. Leaving it up to a profession to do.
Let’s use modern technology to our benefit, YouTube for the win. Simply type into search “How to skin & quarter X” and 100s of videos will pop up. Showing you what you need to do from a small squirrel all the way up to a moose. Now start watching videos, maybe just one a day, start getting an idea of what to do technique wise from different individuals. Start absorbing this knowledge, you may never end up using it. However, think of it this way, you may never splint or set a broken leg either, it still smart to learn how to do it.
Now I strongly suggest you do your research into what do after the kill. I suggest even more to work on your skill sets of the kill, make it humane as possible, no matter what the tool might be. Just because you can shoot an animal doesn’t mean you can shoot it anywhere and have good usable meat. This is another skill set that you can acquire with a plethora of information out there on how to, video, books, classes. Because let’s face it you don’t need a 12g slug to take down a squirrel and 22 lr won’t take down a moose. Don’t know what those two common things are then you have some research ahead of you.
Not everybody has the mind, money, time to go hunting. That does not mean you should not learn about it. It could one day save your life. Well if you ever decided to go outside again.
The world is a roller coaster of events, schedule working on your skill sets daily, that could one day make the difference between life or death is as important as watching the video on how to get a 10k subs on IG. Getting caught with your pants around your ankles and no TP is a small problem compared to not being able to feed yourself.
Tip: rabbits are multipurpose
A bear and a rabbit are both taking a shit in the woods.
The bear asks the rabbit “Do you have a problem with shit sticking to your fur?”
And the rabbit replies “No.”
So the bear wipes his ass with the rabbit.
