Throughout history, society from time to time makes a 90-degree turn. Different things cause this turn. It can be war, it can be famine, in this case it is pestilence. I am not here to write another article about COVID-19. I am not here to complain about what people are saying and doing. I am not writing this to make a case for what people should be doing or saying. What I am here to do is to offer a suggestion to each and every reader.
You see situations like this is what make or break a man. You can give up or you can build up. I have talked about it recently that I lost my job; and I have talked to you recently about how successful I’ve been working for myself. And part of this article will talk about success but that is not the point of this either. You see hard times make strong men, and while these times are not as hard as times that has come before, they are still an interruption to our normal society, our normal way of life. Things are changing in the wind, blowing this way and that, like the smoke from one of my pipes on a lunting trip.
You recently went on a lunting with me, where I discussed this very thing. Back before coronavirus, lockdowns, and quarantines, I talked to you about the ever-changing direction of life. We discussed how our lives are as the pipe smoke in the wind was, there for a minute, and then was gone. While metaphorically I was Speaking of death at the time the vanishing of your life can also represent, the death of an old way of life. I have seen so many people admitting that they have quit working out or they have quit eating correctly. I have seen many people admit that their lifestyle has completely changed, that they are watching more TV or spending less time outdoors. This must change.
What we are really given right now is an opportunity to enhance ourselves. What we have been given is a chance to increase what it is that we already do. The governments have taken away many of our rights including the rights to move freely, the right to gather together, and in some cases the right to speak. But all is not lost, you are still in control of you. With all this extra time you have on your hands, are you exercising more? Are you spending more time with your family? Are you honing a hobby, craft, or trade? What have you taken this extra time that has been given to you to do? So many of us get lost when do not have a set routine. Through all this, many of us have lost our routines, myself included. Anybody who is a reader of barbarian rhetoric knows which article that I got that thought from, but it applies the same as it has giving me much to think about since I read it.
And the main thing that really struck me was how I have lost my routine. I used to get up at 4:00 o’clock in the morning. I would read my Bible, I would pray, I would set out a plan for my day. This has not happened in quite a while, until I read that article. I realized that I was losing structure, and that really I had loss structure, and that it was dragging me down and causing me to fail in areas while succeeding in others. But the areas I was failing in I had once succeeded in. So, at this point I figured all I could do was forced myself back onto my old schedule if it made me successful in some areas, I figured it would make me successful and all. I must confess that today has been much better than many in the past.
So while you’re stuck at home, with closed restaurants and closed bars and whatever else it is that you used to do, I would like to take this moment to encourage you and to remind you that the old life only dies if you allow it. While it is just vapor in the wind as the Bible tells us, you can shield your smoke from that wind. You can enhance what you had before. You can succeed further than you did before. The only thing stopping you is you. And if you are sitting around Watching TV 20 hours a day, if you have giving up the lifestyle that you had before, now is the perfect time to get yourself back to what you should be and what you need to be. I encourage you all to heed the words of Paul, Romans 12:11 “ do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in the spirit, serve the Lord.”
